Towering 28,169 feet above sea-level, Kanchenjunga is the world's third-highest mountain. Its Tibetan name means The Five Treasures of Snow. Its five peaks are shrouded in myth, considered so sacred that the first men to climb it, a British party from 1955, stopped short of the actual summit in deference to the deities of the mountain. It is situated in the eastern Himalayas on the border between northeastern India, and eastern Nepal, 46 miles north-northwest of Darjeeling, India. The mountain is part of the Great Himalaya Range. The Kanchenjunga massif is in the form of a gigantic cross, the arms of which extend north, south, east, and west.
