As a young priest at the Kali temple of Dakshineswar north of Calcutta, Sri Ramakrishna so alarmed temple authorities with his intensity of devotion to the Divine Mother that they relieved him of his duties and sent him home to be married, hoping that matrimony would cure him of his unorthodox and oblivious to the world manner.

By the end of his life, however, this goddess-intoxicated mystic was widely acclaimed as an avatar, a human incarnation of God. After his death, his teachings were spread worldwide by his leading disciple, Swami Vivekananda, a prolific writer and the first emissary of Vedanta philosophy to the United States and Europe.
