We traveled over high foreboding, craggy peaks laden with snow, through piercing cold winds and incredible distances—and then, unexpectedly, we found ourselves standing in front of an amiable Tibetan, you know, as only a devout Tibetan can be. He stood in front of his tiny stall, surrounded by colorful ritual objects of all shapes and sizes, a cornucopia that nearly overwhelmed the senses. We took a quick glance, and there, in the back, up high, something caught our eye—a wooden altar, hand painted—right there, smack dab in the middle of the Tucson Gem Show. We had to have it.
